EV Training
Alot of people don't really know exactally what effort values or EV training are, but it litterally makes ALL the differance. For the most part, effort values are invisible, but for example, you're exploring the Old Chateau and it's mysteries and fighting all the Ghastlys with one pokemon. All of a sudden, it levels up and its special attack rose signifigantly. That is the work of the EVs. They are what make every pokemon different. Different pokemon give different values. It is called effort values because you have to battle and put some effort into it.
EV training is manipulating the effort values gained from battling. For instance, to gain EVs in speed, you would need to fight fast pokemon such as the 'useless' Magikarp. Your pokemon is only allowed to gain a total of 510 effort values and it cannot all be in one stat. The EVs permitted per stat is 255. When you have accieved 510 EVs, a person will give your pokemon an effort ribbon. In Sinnoh, the person is in the Sunnyshore Market; in Hoenn it is a woman at the market in Slateport. I don't know who the people are in Kanto or Hoenn.
There are some items that add 4 to the EVs gained in battle. They are the Power Weight (HP), Power Bracer (Attack), Power Belt (Defence), Power Lense (Sp. Attack), Power Band (Sp. Defence), and Power Anklet (Speed). But there is also an item that doubles the EVs gained: the Macho Brace. All those items make EV training go faster than without them equipped. Magikarp gived 1 EV for speed, so with no item you would need to fight 261 Magikarp to fill up the speed stat. With the Macho Brace, you would only need to fight 128 Magikarp; and with the Power Anklet, you would only need to fight 51 Magikarp. But, there is also another factor that aids the training- pokerus. Pokerus doubles the EVs gained, so with your infected pokemon holding the power item, you would only need to fight 25 Magikarp because you would get 10 values per battle. You could probably fully train one stat in around 20 minutes.
My tips:
* If you are EV training on the offensive and finish that stat, try finishing the pokemon off by training it in speed or in it's weakest defence.
* Natures are slightly important, so train a pokemon in a nature that benifits the stat you want to train in. Some natures lower one stat 10% then raise another 10%.
